Why does queen elizabeth cut her hair short in elizabeth?

the truth is always the simplest thing. She was tired of the cumbersome routine of having to have it put up to go out. It was annoying given the crown and te constant appearances. Others may want to beleave it had someting to do with appearances but it really had to do with comfort.

To simply make herself into something other than a woman. She doesn't want to be viewed as a woman, simply as a Queen. She cuts her hair short, puts on the White Make-up to become statueesque... something more than a man or woman. Someone above it all. It set her apart to do it.

Since Catholicism was no longer the primary religion of the country, she felt the people needed another female image to worship. Elizabeth reinvented herself in a grand way using the Virgin Mary as inspiration (another example was in whitening her skin). She cut off her hair because it was analogous to cutting off her previous self (perhaps represented her sexuality as well). The overall impression was in stark contrast to her previous image. She was almost holy in appearance (remember after her transformation when she came into the room and a bright light preceded her) and powerful.

While I don't disagree with the other 2 answers, generally speaking, anyone who wears a wig a lot (like most of the gentry and nobility from 16th -18th Century) cut off their hair for 2 reasons:

1) in order to wear the wig without it sitting on top of their normal hair

2) to cut down on lice

If you notice in this kind of historical drama, when the person does not have their wig on, they are usually wearing a plain cap of some kind to cover their shaven or stubbly head.
